Our Services

Phoenix Water Services delivers safe, reliable water and wastewater services to over 1.7 million customers by managing a sustainable network of resources. Our water supply draws from a diverse mix of sources, including the Salt, Verde, and Colorado Rivers, allowing us to prioritize surface water while reserving groundwater for critical needs. Phoenix's advanced water treatment facilities ensure that every drop meets the highest quality standards before it reaches your tap. Our wastewater system efficiently treats, recycles, and repurposes water, supporting environmental health and sustainable reuse for agriculture, energy production, and river replenishment. Through careful management, we provide essential services that protect public health and preserve water resources for generations to come.

Water System Map

Our Drinking Water System

Drinking Water System Facts:

  • 1.7 million water customers
  • 50,000 fire hydrants
  • 7,000 miles of water pipe
  • 5 water treatment plants

Click through the diagrams to see how we treat, move, and conserve drinking water.

How we treat, move, and conserve drinking water

1 Our main water resources come from the Verde, Salt and Colorado rivers

2 Water sources are then directed to 1 of 5 Phoenix water treatment plants

3 We ensure the Phoenix water supply is delivered with the highest quality

4 We manage and maintain distribution to meet demand and ensure supply for fire protection

5 Customer accounts are managed and serviced through a metering system

Our Wastewater System

Wastewater System Facts:

  • 2.5 million wastewater customers
  • 90,000 manholes
  • 5,000 miles of wastewater pipe
  • 2 wastewater treatment plants

Click through the diagrams to see how we treat, move, and conserve wastewater.

How we treat, move, and conserve wastewater

1 Wastewater moves from homes, schools and businesses into the sanitary sewer system

2 Wastewater is treated to the highest standards in 1 of 3 Phoenix wastewater treatment plants

3 Wastewater is screened, filtered and disinfected into high quality recycled water

4 Recycled water cools power plants, irrigates crops and recharges rivers

5 We sustainably reuse bio-solids for fertilizer and bio-gas for power

Our Well Water System

Well Water System Facts:

  • 22 wells in use in our system
  • 2% of water supply
  • 2 2 types of wells

Click through the diagrams to see how we use well water in our system.

How we use well water

1 Our system uses both production wells and storage and recovery wells

2 Production wells are a type of well that only pump water from underground

3 Storage and recovery wells have the ability to store water underground and pump for use later on

4 We do not strongly rely on well water, since 98% of our water supply comes from surface water which meets our current demand

5 Groundwater is used sparingly to save it for times of drought
